Where Should I Start With Kitesurfing?

Alex Hudson

Kitesurfing is one of those sports that just looks effortlessly cool. You see experienced kitesurfers zipping up and down the bay, or across the harbour, looking like they’re having the time of their lives. Some even throw in the odd jump or trick.

From the shore, they really do make it look easy - and a lot of fun too. So, if you want to get into kitesurfing where should you start?

The first place, and possibly the obvious one, is with some lessons. For all that it’s fun, kitesurfing isn’t without its risks, so you need to make sure you know what you’re doing when you head out on the water with a kite attached.

In fact, your kite is where you should begin, because mastering your kite-flying skills will give you a big head start once you add a board and get wet. Booking kitesurfing lessons is definitely the way to go. They might seem expensive, but you’ll learn the proper techniques to launch and control your kite, ensuring that you and everyone else in the area stays safe.

Once you’ve had a few lessons you might want to start thinking about buying your own gear so that you can practice and hone your skills. Talk to your instructor about what equipment you should start out with. They’ll be able to give you advice on what will work best for you, based on your skill level and your size.

If you’re new to the sport, kitesurfing packages are a good place to start looking, as they’ll give you everything you need to get started and get out on the water.
